On Witter Bynner's Motives of Translating The Three Hundred T'ang Poems
The translator's translation motives are subject to both internal and external factors.The translator's own poetic pursuit and ideology are intertwined with the poetic fashion and ideology of the era in which he lives,which governs the translator's choice of the translated text and has a significant impact on the acceptance and dissemination of the translated text in the literary system of the target country.Taking Witter Bynner's motives of translating The Three Hundred T'ang Poems as an example,based on the theory of Medio-translatology,this paper explores the influence of the interplay of Witter Bynner's own internal factors and external social factors on his choice of translated texts in the social and cultural context of the times by analyzing Bynner's letters,essays,prefaces,translated poems and other historical documents.The translator's choice of the translated text is in line with the needs of the times and his own pursuits,leading to the successful acceptance and dissemination of the translated text.
