The Nature,Function and Translation of English Discourse Markers
Discourse maker(DM)is a common linguistic phenomenon in verbal interaction.Scholars,at home and abroad,have explored its functions from different perspectives such as coherence theory.Discourse marker,as an independent part of verbal speech,is not interdependent with other elements nearby and does not contain any practical meaning.Normally,it has no influence on the propositional content,but it will influence the implications of conversation,helping speakers to fulfill their intention of communication.This paper probes into the nature,features,functions and translation of discourse marker based on its definition,analysis of essential features and differences of coding patterns between English discourse marker and Chinese discourse marker.The major functions of discourse marker lie in its textual function and pragmatic function.Correct understanding and translation of discourse marker depend on its specific context.
