An Analysis of the Dissemination of Jin Ping Mei in Japan During the Edo Period
Jin Ping Mei has been transmitted to Japan soon after its creation and has had a certain influence on Japanese literature and art.Examining the historical process of its dissemination and impact in Japan reveals three characteristics:immediacy, multiple channels, and an active attitude in acceptance.Among the"Four Great Masterpieces of Chinese Literature,"Jin Ping Mei has the fewest and latest Japanese translations, and it is regarded as a"scholar's book",more favored by the cultural elite. This is largely due to its excessively vulgar linguistic features, more conservative literary concepts, and the mixed ideas and complex rituals that pervade the entire book, resulting in a noticeable disconnect with Japanese readers of that time.
