The increase of internal pressure caused by gas generation may cause structural cracking of the battery, leading to safety and reliability issues such as electrolyte leakage and thermal runaway.A reasonable residual volume of battery is very important, because it can ensure that the battery has a high energy density, while reducing the internal pressure of the battery, thereby reducing the risk of battery failure. We developed a simple and accurate method to measure the residual volume of battery based on the law of conservation of mass and the ideal gas equation. It has been verified that the test precision of this method is mainly determined by the accuracy of the selected barometer.By using a high-precision barometer, the test deviation is only about 0.04%.We measured the evolution of residual volume under different SOC states, and the results are consistent with the theoretical deduction. This method is also suitable for studying the dissolution process of different gases in electrolytes, providing basic data for calculating the practical gas volume ofbatteries.
