It is vital to clarify the relationship between textbook language, instructional language and thinking in promoting the development of students'thinking competence. However, there is still a lack of guidance for teachers to understand teaching materials in the existing research on thinking development. Therefore, understanding the ways of thinking from textbooks so as to achieve consistency between what's in the textbooks and the thinking of teachers plays an important role in promoting the development of students'thinking.Based on the above research background, according to Vygotsky's theory of the dynamic development relationship between language and thinking, this paper constructs a framework to analyze the relationship between textbooks, language and thinking, and to clearify the process of"textbook language to instructional language and then to students'thinking competence"in EFL learning.Taking the revised version of FLTPR English textbooks(Grades 7-9)(New standard)as an example, this paper reveals the characteristics of developing students'thinking competence in the textbook from three perspectives:the analysis of the compiling concept of the unit, the thinking routes embodied in the discourse, and the activities of each unit. Finally, this paper also refines the teaching strategies to promote the development of students'thinking competence.
