Nanwuyeman's New Story of Stone and the Indigenous Bildungsroman in Late Qing Dynasty in China
It is universally acknowledged that the Chinese Bildungsroman emerged during the period of the May Fourth Movement, and almost all of the works that had the rudiments of Bildungsroman before that period were translated. In fact,New Story of Stone by Nanwuyeman in the late Qing Dynasty, the sequel to Dream of Red Mansions,is a typical Bildungsroman that was initiated by the peculiar atmosphere at that time.Different from the"pseudo-growth"in Wu Zhaoren's fiction with the same title,Nanwu detailed the gradual growth of the protagonist Jia Baoyu and focused on the mutual growth of the individual and the nation. To some extent,it demonstrates a modernity that transcends other literary creations of that period. The distinctive growth factors of Bildungsroman in the fiction derive from the particularity of the image of Jia Baoyu, and are closely related to the new policy and the wave of studying abroad in the late Qing Dynasty.Although the Bildungsroman in that period, represented by New Story of Stone, has its own limitations,it can still be regarded as a metaphor of the nation striving to break through the obstacles and seek development.
