Internationalization of Higher Education:Aspirational Goals,Realistic Challenges, and Practical Pathways
Internationalization of higher education is the inevitable requirement and key starting point of higher education modernization in China. The higher education system, rooted in China and grounded in the nation's demands, with the aim of enhancing international influence and serving societal development, constitutes the inherent obligation of the internationalization of higher education in China. However, the process is faced with challenges due to the restriction of external environment, construction norms, and developmental factors, resulting in an imbalanced and insufficient reality in the internationalization efforts of China's higher education. To meet these challenges, further advancement of internationalization in higher education in China entails resolving the dilemma in the conception, system and content of internationalization, and developing forms of internationalization at home that are rooted in Chinese characteristic cultures. It also involves promoting the institutional system construction aimed at establishing a sustainable talent cultivation mechanism, optimizing the development pattern of opening-up under the"Belt and Road"initiative, and achieving a stable and continuous enhancement in the level of university internationalization.
