The Authors'Identity and Knowledge Sources of Plant Genealogies in the Song Dynasty
During the Song Dynasty, the authors of plant genealogies were predominantly from the literati class, who mainly acquired the plant knowledge through activities such as cultivation, garden observation, official travels, and scholarly pursuits.Influenced by the Confucian ethos of"Gewu(studying phenomena of nature)",these intellectuals were inspired to compile plant genealogies.Emphasizing the authenticity of recorded botanical information, they also sought to elucidate the underlying principles of plants to achieve a deeper understanding. In this process, the group of gardeners played an important role in the renewal and evolution of plant knowledge. However, diverging from the scholars'pursuit of deep understanding, the true innovators behind the botanical knowledge remained obscured within the texts.Through an examination of the authors of plant genealogies and their sources of knowledge, this study aims to reconstruct the methods of production and dissemination of botanical knowledge during the Song Dynasty. It also seeks to analyze the impact of intellectual trends on the documentation of botanical knowledge from the perspective of the history of knowledge society.
