Role of Hyaluronic Acid in Promoting Intestinal Health
Objective To explore the effect of hyaluronic acid(HA)on intestinal health in mice. Methods Using DSS induced ulcerative colitis mouse model, the colon length of mice was measured, and DAI and CMDI scoring and histopathological examination were performed to evaluate the effect of oral administration of HA on ulcerative colitis in mice. The small intestine peristalsis inhibition model and constipation model in mice were established, and the ink propulsion rate, the first black stool time, the weight and number of black stools were calculated to evaluate the effect of oral administration of HA on the laxative function of mice. The effects of oral administration of HA on the immune function of mice were evaluated by the determination of cellular immunity, humoral immunity,monocyte-macrophage function and NK cell activity. Results The experimental results of the effect of HA on DSS induced ulcerative colitis in mice showed that the colon lengths of mice in low and medium doses of HA groups were significantly increased, the CMDI scores were significantly decreased, and the histological scores were significantly decreased, indicating that HA can effectively alleviate the symptoms of DSS induced colon reduction and mucosal injury in mice. The results of small intestinal motility experiment showed that the ink propulsion rate of each HA dose group was significantly increased, indicating that HA could promote small intestinal peristalsis. The results of defecation function experiments showed that the first black stool time of each HA dose group was significantly shortened, and the weight and number of black stools were significantly increased, indicating that HA could promote defecation in mice.HA could also improve cellular immunity, humoral immunity and monocyte-macrophage function. Conclusion HA can improve intestinal inflammation, loosen bowel to relieve constipation, and enhance immunity.
