摘要
美国作家薇拉·凯瑟立足美国农业革命和第三次移民浪潮的社会历史语境,在《啊,拓荒者!》中成功塑造了一位兼具商人和移民双重身份的新农民形象亚历山德拉,表现出她通过新农民书写积极参与构建国族共同体的创作取向.一方面,凯瑟对亚历山德拉商人农民身份的描摹顺应了美国政府借助农业改革重划国家疆域、重构国族身份的政治意图;另一方面,作家对亚历山德拉移民农民身份的精心刻画透露出她消解移民浪潮引发认同危机的文化图谋.本文对凯瑟新农民书写的探讨丰富了亚历山德拉作为经典拓荒者的政治、文化内涵,否定了那些认为凯瑟"远离工业文明"的传统论调,强调了该作品是凯瑟以"古老的农村方式"参与构建国族政治、文化共同体的重要文学实践.
Abstract
Willa Cather portrays the"new farmer"Alexandra in her novel O Pioneer!both as a businesswoman and an immigrant,in the sociohistorical context of American agricultural revolution and the immigration wave.The successful rendering of the new farmer gives prominence to her part in the construction of national community.On the one hand,the vivid portrayal of the new farmer as a businesswoman responded vigorously to the political and historical situation that American government had to reallocate the national territory and reconstruct national identity through agricultural reform;on the other hand,the emphasis on Alexandra as an immigrant exposed Cather's cultural conspiracy in resolving the identity crisis caused by the third immigrant wave.Through the examination of the new farmer writing,this essay enriches the cultural and political connotation of Alexandra as a classic pioneer,and further refutes the traditional view that Cather turns away from industrial civilization.It highlights Cather's active engagements in the construction of a new political and cultural community nationwide through an"ancient rural way".
