Abstract
Zadie Smith,an esteemed contemporary British writer, has garnered the moniker of"literary chameleon"for her remarkable versatility in artistic expression, with her seminal novel NW,published in 2012.Smith masterfully employs narrator intervention to delve into the ethical dimensions of class identity among marginalized communities, addressing these concerns at both the discourse and narrative levels. Her third person narration, which consciously avoids the omnipotent gaze of the omniscient narrator, artfully illuminates the author's ethical stance on societal issues through a trio of narrative techniques:the ambiguous conclusion, the shifting focalization, and the narrative authenticity.Furthermore,Smith's spatial narrative brings out the urban landscape of London, using the characters'spatial displacements to reconstruct the intricate ethical relationships between the self and others. This narrative approach not only enhances the reader's engagement with the text but also fosters a sense of"ethics of reading."Smith's ingenious utilization of these three narrative strategies not only underscores her profound ethical concern for the marginalized communities but also stands as a compelling example of formal innovation in the new millennial British fiction.
