YU Jiayan,a famous doctor of the early Qing Dynasty in Xujiang,recorded a wealth of theoretical thoughts on the treatment of edema in the Precepts for Physicians,which mainly focuses on the three zang organs of lung,spleen and kidney,and divided edema into five syndromes:wind edema,skin edema,typical edema,stony edema and yellow sweat.He paid attention to the role of original yang of kidney in water vaporization and emphasized that the original yang of kidney and the qi in the chest must not be hurt in medication.YU Jiayan believed that the appropriate medicines are crucial to treat diseases,which are used to normalize the transportation and transformation of spleen,management and regulation of lung,closure of kidney and vaporization of bladder.
