Application of Huangqin(Scutellaria Baicalensis)in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica and Classic Formulas
It was stated in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica that:"Huangqin(Scutellaria Baicalensis),bitter in taste and neutral in property,is mainly used to treat various heat syndromes,jaundice and bloody stool,to expel water,to relieve amenorrhea,and to cure severe sore,ulcer and scald."Based on the indications of Huangqin recorded in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica,the application of Huangqin in classic formulas was analyzed.For treating various heat syndromes and jaundice,Huangqin is mainly combined with Chaihu(Bupleuri Radix)and Banxia(Pinelliae Rhizoma),etc.,represented by Xiaochaihu Decoction(小柴胡汤).For treating bloody stool,it is mainly combined with Huanglian(Coptidis Rhizoma)and Shaoyao(Paeoniae Radix Alba),etc.,represented by Gegen Huangqin Huanglian Decoction(葛根黄芩黄连汤),Huangqin Decoction(黄芩汤)and Xiexin Decoction(泻心汤),etc.For treating amenorrhea,it is mainly combined with Shaoyao,Taoren(Persicae Semen)and medicinal insects,etc.,represented by Dahuang Zhechong Pill(大黄䗪虫丸)and Biejiajian Pill(鳖甲煎丸).For treating severe sore,ulcer and scald,it is mainly combined with Wangbuliuxing(Vaccariae Semen),Huajiao(Zanthoxyli Pericarpium),Shaoyao,Sangbaipi(Mori Cortex),etc.,represented by Wangbuliuxing Powder(王不留行散).In addition,ZHANG Zhongjing had also expanded indications of Huangqin.The combination of Huangqin and different medicinals can play different roles,such as combination with Banxia,Huanglian and Ganjiang(Zingiberis Rhizoma)etc.for treating gastric stuffiness,combination with Ejiao(Asini Corii Colla),Huanglian etc.for treating vexation,combination with Baizhu(Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma)and Fuzi(Aconti Lateralis Radix Praeparaia)etc.for treating bleeding,combination with Danggui(Angelicae Sinensis Radix)and Baizhu for treating threatened abortion caused by internal heat.
