GAO Shuzhong's Experience in Treating Throat Diseases by Method of Regulating Qi
Professor GAO Shuzhong believes that throat diseases are mostly caused by the abnormal movement of qi in the throat, with wind, fire, and phlegm being the important pathogenic factors.Clinically, from the perspective of qi movement,Professor GAO first distinguishes external infections from internal injuries.External pathogenic factors obstruct the qi movement in the throat and are related to the defensive qi of the lung.Internal injuries are mostly caused by emotional factors, with the pathogenesis rooted in the imbalance of qi movement in the zang-fu organs, particularly related to the lung, stomach, liver, and kidney. In the treat-ment,Professor GAO adheres to the pathogenesis and uses the method of regulating qi,treating external infections by spreading and dispersing, and treating internal injuries by ascending and descending,in combination with methods such as dispelling wind, clearing heat and resolving phlegm, nourishing yin to lower fire, etc. He puts forward the theory of"three ascents and three descents"of qi move-ment in the zang-fu organs and the theory of"Jingguan",advocating the combination of acupuncture and medicine, making good use of empirical acupoints such as Queshang, flexibly using classical prescriptions, paying attention to the ascending and descending characteristics of medicinals, particularly valuing the decocting and taking method, and comprehensively using various therapies including pricking Yingxue and applying plasters to the soles of the feet.A proved medical case is attached.
