Professor LIU Yongnian believes that the location of burning mouth syndrome is in the tongue and mouth,and it is related to the heart,spleen,liver,and kidney.The causes of the disease are related to irregular diet,emotional disorders,deficiency of liver and kidney,etc.,with the main pathogenic characteristics being"heat"and"depression".Prolonged heat pathogen turns into fire through stagnation,and the fire ascending along the meridians disturbs the mouth and tongue,resulting in burning pain.The excess syndromes of this disease are mostly caused by dampness depression turning into fire,or qi depression turning into fire,while the deficiency syndromes are mostly caused by yin deficiency and heat depression.Therefore,clearing heat and dispelling depression is the main treatment method for this disease.Clearing heat includes clearing heart fire,clearing dampness-heat,clearing deficiency-heat,clearing stagnated heat,while dispelling depression involves soothing the liver and resolving depression,and expel pathogenic heat from exterior.
