Clinical Observation on Treatment of Chronic Insomnia with Superficial Head Acupuncture Based on"Cutaneous Region Theory"
Objective:To observe the clinical efficacy of superficial head acupuncture therapy on chronic insomnia patients based on the"cutaneous region theory".Methods:A total of 82 patients with chronic insomnia were divided into the superficial acupuncture group and the control group according to random number table method, with 41 cases in each group. In the superficial acupuncture group, the dermatomes of governor vessel and bladder meridian of foot taiyang were selected to circulate in the head area[from the front level of the Shenting acupoint(GV24)to the back level of the Baihui acupoint(GV20),with the left and right sides of the center line opening 3 cm aside as the boundary],and the interval between the acupuncture needles was about 10 mm to 15 mm,and the depth of the needles was about 2 mm to 5 mm,while in the control group,14 acupoints were taken from bilateral Zhaohai(KI6),Shenmai(BL62),Shenmen(HT7),Sanyinjiao(SP6),Anmian and Sishencong(EX-HN1).Both groups were treated three times a week, the treatment was for 4 weeks in total. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI),Insomnia Severity Index(ISI),Epworth Sleepiness Scale(ESS),Self-assessed Depression Scale Score(SDS),Self-assessed Anxiety Scale Score(SAS)before and after treatment were observed in both groups. Results:After treatment, the scores of PSQI,ISI,ESS,SDS and SAS in both groups were lower than those before treatment(P<0.05),and the scores of ESS,SDS and SAS in the superficial acupuncture group were lower than those in the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion:Based on the"cutaneous region theory",superficial acupuncture on the head can effectively improve the patients'sleep status, anxiety and depression in the treatment of chronic insomnia, and it is more effective than conventional acupuncture in improving anxiety, depression and daytime sleepiness.
