In recent years,acupotomy therapy has been widely used in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis(AS).Originating from the"sharp needle"among the"nine needles"of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),and integrating theories of western anatomy,this therapy continuously offers modern and diverse interpretations of diseases.It represents one of the explorations into the modernization of TCM techniques.This paper first analyzes the etiology and pathogenesis of AS from the perspective of TCM,then discusses the pathogenic mechanism of AS from a western medical standpoint.Subsequently,based on the different understandings of AS's pathogenesis by TCM and western medicine,it elucidates the mechanisms of treating AS with acupotomy therapy through"differentiating meridians to determine treatment"and"differentiating structures to determine treatment".Furthermore,it reviews and summarizes related therapeutic effect to provide references for clinical treatment of AS.
