American Compliments:Intercultural Teaching Strategies from the Perspective of Pragmatics
Americans are not stingy in praising others.They have a set of conventionalized linguistic formulae when they greet each other with courtesy and politeness.The acclimation,imitation and mechanic application imply that the use of compliments is patterned and bears a strong pragmatic color.The increase in the use of exclamation sentences,modal words,colloquial expressions and slang,resulting in the generalization of the meanings,the hyperbolization of utterances and the popularization of linguistic style.In terms of English teaching,teachers should adhere to the principle that language and culture complement each other.They should not only let students accept the edification of American compliments,but also teach them by percept and examples,so that the students can deeply understand the pragmatic connotation and contextual information hidden in the compliments to enhance their appreciation of language and culture.
