A Study of National Image Construction in English News for International Publicity Based on Stance Marker Perspective
Based on metadiscourse stance construction perspective, this study analyzes the presented national image of China in a corpus of English publicity news reports collected from four main official media—People's Daily Online,China Daily,XINHUANET and CGTN.Results show that stance markers, with the frequency of 16.31 per millennium, help project the author into the news, convey the author's judgment, opinion and affection through the interaction with readers, and build positive national image, and that, with dual rhetorical functions of credible and affective appeals, the frequency of self-mentions is far more than that of attitude markers, hedges and boosters. It can be concluded that stance markers contribute to different aspects of national image under different contexts, shaping a reliable, admirable and respectable image of China.
