Role of cholesterol metabolism in osteoarthritis:a review of research progresses
Osteoarthritis(OA)is a degenerative disease associated with aging and has long been linked to obesity. Some studies suggest that OA might be a metabolic disease, impacting not only weight-bearing joints but also non-weight-bearing joints.Emerging evidence indicates abnormal cholesterol metabolism in osteoarthritis, with pathways leading to the production of pro-inflammatory substances crucial to OA development.Drugs capable of modulating ab-normal cholesterol metabolism hold considerable therapeutic promise for OA.This article aims to summarize the role and comprehensive molecular mechanisms of cholesterol metabolism in osteoarthritis and proposes that a multi-faceted regu-lation of cholesterol metabolism could be a promising strategy for the clinical treatment of osteoarthritis.
