Based on the data of the China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)and the China Modernization Report, this paper examines the impact of modernization on the pre-endowment and spontaneous marriage patterns that represent the social status of individuals in China. The results have showed that:in China's marriage matching model,"strong men and weak women"are in the dominant position in homogeneous marriage and heterogeneous marriage while the pattern of"strong women and weak men"in heterogeneous marriage shows an upward trend;the level of modernization significantly positively impacts heterogeneous marriage, with a greater impact on the pre-endowment marriage model and at the same time, the results obtained from the replacement model and measurement variables also support the robustness of the conclusion;mechanism analysis shows that modernization affects marriage patterns by changing people's gender roles and mate selection patterns;there is heterogeneity in the impact of modernization on different characteristic groups, and among which, the level of modernization has the greatest impact on the marriage patterns in the eastern region;the positive impact is more significant on heterogeneous marriages in rural education, family background, urban household registration heteromarriages, and heteromarriages born after the reform and opening up.
