Abstract
The No.568 seated Buddha statue unearthed in Nannieshui,Qinxian County,Shanxi Province,is a work with an obvious style of the Pingcheng era of the Northern Wei Dynasty.Through an in-depth study of the modelling elements such as the shoulder-covered Buddha robe on the right side of the statue, the coat ornamentation, the double lion with petals on the mouth, the donor, and the Boshan furnace,it is concluded that the date is roughly from the second year of Yanxing(471)to the eighth year of Taihe(484)of the Northern Wei Dynasty, which provides an essential physical example for the study of the southern transmission of the Yungang model. At the same time,it and the early statue tablets and grotto statues in the surrounding areas together confirm the critical position of the monasteries on both sides of the Nie River in the spread of Buddhism, and also prove that before the Northern Wei Dynasty moved the capital to Luoyang, the Buddhist art of Pingcheng penetrated into the hinterland of the southeast of Jin.
