The 2024 Shanghai Chronicle Forum collected more than 150 papers with 44 of them selected through experts'assessment.And another 20 papers were specially commissioned.In terms of content,these papers show four characteris-tics.First,the theoretical research on local chronicles is more systematic and comprehensive.Second,the thinking on the practice of chronicle compilation is deeper.Third,the research on old chronicles is more detailed.Fourth,the research on local histories,especially Shanghai local history,covers a wide range.In terms of research preferences,the scholars in the official chronicle system mostly study chronicle theories,while those in other agencies and organizations prefer to study old chronicles and local histories.In terms of geographical distribution,both the local authors in Shanghai and the scholars from all other provinces across the country and even Hong Kong,Macao and Taiwan of China had sent their papers.However,some papers need improvement in academic norms and theories,and attention should be paid to the tendency of valuing old chronicles over new ones.This paper suggests the chronicle scholars and researchers carry out theoretical research on the basis of abundant chronicle compilation practices and extensive newly published chronicles,summarize exemplary experi-ence,discover problems and deficiencies,form compilation theories,and promote development of the discipline.They are also advised to broaden their professional horizons,expand their ways of thinking,make their studies more professional and normalized,and boost the high-quality development of local chronicle compilation with practical actions.
