Based on a profound discrimination of urban historical morphology and through the urban texture seen in the old town of Shanghai, this paper reexamines the historical landscapes such as the road network, blocks, water system, and gardens in the area from ancient times to the present, and traces back to its unique initial urban structure and the genetic basis of urban historical morphology related to its origin and prototype as a market town. This paper concludes that the old town of Shanghai is diverse in terms of land use conditions and spatial dimensions. It still retains the spatial framework and morphological genes with the characteristics of ancient Jiangnan water towns, and features the fusion of new and old spatial elements and architectural layering on multiple levels and scales since the Northern Song Dynasty. This conclusion will in-spire future planning and design on more dimensions.
