The Zhangjing River is one of the mother rivers of Jinshan in Shanghai.During the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties, the section reaching Songjiang on its north and Zhangyan on its south was threatened by salt tide intrusion and waterlogging caused by accumulated water. From the Yuan Dynasty to the beginning of the Ming Dynasty(before theYongle period),the stretch of the Zhangjing River was unchanged and almost no longer intruded by sea water, but the waterlogging along the river got more serious because of the surge in the amount of water in Sanmao.During the Yongle peri-od in the Ming Dynasty, after the Huangpu River surpassed the Wusong River and became the main watercourse, the Zhangjing River was forcibly cut into two sections:the northern section was gradually silted up and the southern section be-came a new main river. However,as dikes were built to block the sea and the Mao Lake was silted up and turned into land, the clear water from the Zheshui River in the west was increasingly unable to compete with the turbid tide from the Huangpu River flowing southward, resulting in a great reduction in the water flow of the Zhangjing River. It was repeatedly dredged but also repeatedly silted up.(This chronic problem was not"cured"until after the founding of the People's Republic of China.)
