Influence of nursing intervention on preventing complications in patients with peripherally inserted central catheter
Objective To explore the influence of nursing intervention on preventing complications in patients with peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC). Methods Thirty cases after PICC surgery in our hospital from August 2009 to September 2010 were recruited into the intervention group, and treated with nursing intervention including cognitive, psychological and behavioral intervention. Another 30 cases after PICC surgery in our hospital from October 2008 to July 2009 were recruited into the control group without nursing intervention. The incidences of various complications were compared between the two groups. Results The incidences of various complications in the intervention group were lower than those in the control group, with significant differences in catheter clog and phlebitis ( P <0.05 ). The incidences of catheter slippage and catheter damage were not statistically different ( P > 0.05 ). Conclusion Effective nursing intervention can obviously avoid or reduce the incidences of complications in patients with PICC, which is helpful in their therapy and quality of life.
