Summary of Best Evidence for Thirst Management in Postoperative Patients
Objective To summarize the evidence for thirst management in postoperative patients,aiming to provide a reference for clinical nurses to deal with thirst symptoms.Methods Based on the"6S"evidence pyramid,the articles(practice guideline,expert consensus,evidence summary,clinical decision,recommended practice,systematic review,etc.)related to postoperative thirst were retrieved in databases from their establishment to December 31,2022,using Chinese terms"口渴/口干/口腔干燥/干渴"and"术后/围术期/围手术期"as well as English terms"thirst/dry mouth/xerostomia/thirsty/polydipsia/mouth dryness/hyposalivation/asialia"and"perioperative period/perioperative/postoperative/after operation/post operation".Subsequently,the retrieved articles were screened,evaluated for quality and summarized for evidence by two independent researchers.Results A total of 11 articles were included,including 1 practical guideline,3 evidence summaries,4 systematic reviews and 3 expert consensuses.A total of 13 pieces of evidence were summarized from 4 aspects,including thirst assessment,intervention strategies,effect evaluation and educational training,with 7 pieces of evidence at level 1 and 6 at level 5.Conclusion Clinical nurses should pay attention to the thirst management of postoperative patients,timely and accurately evaluate their thirst symptoms,and develop tailored intervention strategies to relieve thirst and maximize their comfort level.
