Phenomenological Study on the Care Experience and Role Adaptation of Newborns'Fathers
Objective To explore fathers'experience in caring for their newborns and wives who experienced their first delivery,as well as their psychosocial adaptation to the role of father. Methods A total of 12 fathers whose wives experienced their first delivery from July to September 2022 were selected by purposive sampling to receive semi-structured interviews.Their interview data was analyzed by Colaizzi's 7-step method. Results A total of 3 themes were extracted regarding the care experience and role adaptation of newborns'fathers:①experiencing a range of emotions(nervousness, worry, anticipation and fear)along with an increased sense of responsibility;② encountering challenges in care practices, including lack of experience in maternal and neonatal care and heightened fatigue;③ facing limited external support, including less communication with healthcare providers, insufficient dissemination of caring knowledge, and inadequate environmental comfort. Conclusion Caring for wives and newborns helps fathers to adapt to their roles and assume family responsibilities, thereby fostering the development of intimate parent-child relationships and the formation of harmonious families. However, these fathers also encounter challenges, such as a sharp increase in pressure due to lack of care experience, heightened fatigue due to lack of sleep and difficulties in managing their emotions when facing their wives'childbirth trauma.Healthcare providers should pay more attention to the psychological states of these individuals, address their concerns, guide them to understand maternal and neonatal care precautions and carry out timely health education activities in various forms. The ultimate goal is to help these individuals set up harmonious and stable families.
