Overview of the Systematic Reviews Regarding Effects of Acupoint Massage on Insomnia
Objective To overview the systematic reviews or Meta-analyses regarding the effects of acupoint massage on insomnia, aiming to provide a reference for its clinical application in insomnia treatment. Methods Systematic reviews or Meta-analyses regarding acupoint massage in the treatment of insomnia were systematically retrieved in CNKI,Wanfang Data,VIP,CBMdisc,PubMed,Web of Science,The Cochrane Library,Embase and Medline from their establishment to January 19,2023.The methodological quality and level of evidence of the studies included were assessed using AMSTAR 2 and GRADE Ⅱ.Results A total of 8 systematic reviews/Meta-analyses were included. The results of AMSTAR 2 showed that the quality was medium for 1 article, low for 5 articles and extremely low for 2 articles. The results showed that acupoint massage improved the sleep quality of patients with insomnia, with subjective indicators being primarily employed for efficacy evaluation;although a certain rule was followed for acupoint selection,a unified approach was lacking.Mostly, the recommended protocol involved massaging Shenmen(HT7),Sanyinjiao(SP6),Yongquan(KI1),Neiguan(PC6),Baihui(DU20)and Taiyang(EX-HN5)for 1-5 min at night or before bedtime for 4 consecutive weeks to a degree that a sensation of acid bilge is felt but still tolerable. Conclusion Acupoint massage can improve the sleep quality of patients with different types of insomnia and the commonly used acupoints, massage timing, frequency, duration and cycle are similar among these different types.Given the low methodological quality and evidence level of the included articles, the efficacy of acupoint massage requires further validation in high-quality and large-sample randomized controlled trials.
