The present paper,reminding readers of Xu Weinan,who was a pioneer in the study of the 1853 uprising staged by the Small Swords Society and unconventionally contended that this event should be independent of Taiping Uprising,asserts that Xu's study actually opened up new horizon and benefitted greatly the re-markable A Collection of Primary Sources regarding Small Swords Society Uprising in Shanghai edited by the Institute of History of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences.
