How Does Digital Countryside Construction Affect Rural Residents'Consumption?——An Empirical Analysis Based on County Matched Data
The quality and expansion of rural residents'consumption is an important way to expand domestic demand and stabilize growth under the new development pattern and accelerate the construction of a large domestic cycle, and the digital countryside is an important hand in the implementation of the rural revitalization strategy,as well as an important initiative to release the digital dividend of the countryside and stimulate the consumption power of rural residents.Existing research mostly focuses on the identification of the effect of digital village construction on the consumption of rural residents, while the differences in the impact and the specific mechanism of action remain to be further analyzed.Based on the matched data from the 2018 China Family Panel Studies(CFPS)and County Digital Rural Index, the article empirically analyzes the effects, dimensional differences, action mechanisms and heterogeneity of the impact of digital countryside construction on rural residents'consumption. The study finds that digital village construction can significantly promote rural residents'consumption, with the most obvious promotion effect on enjoyment-type consumption, and the strongest promotion effect on rural residents'various types of consumption expenditures by the digital construction of rural infrastructure and rural life. The increase in rural residents'income and the depth of Internet use,the reduction of income uncertainty and mobility constraints are the main paths through which the digital countryside promotes rural residents'consumption, and it is more obvious for the promotion of consumption of households with a higher level of education of the head of the household, and with a lighter burden of family support. The policy promotion effect is more significant for households in areas with weaker financial exclusion, higher level of digital financial development and lower industrial structure. In contrast, there is no significant difference in the consumption-boosting effect of digital village construction between areas with higher and lower disposable incomes of rural residents within the county. The article provides empirical evidence for the consumption-expanding effect of digital village construction, and provides theoretical references for further promoting digital village construction and rural revitalization strategy.
