On the Epistemology of On the Hardness and Whiteness of a Stone by Gongsun Long
We are of the view that On the Hardness and Whiteness of a Stone represents Gongsun Long's epistemology.This interpretation,we believe,needs further elaboration.To this end,we first review,correct,and refine the major existing interpretations of the work and then endeavor to offer a comprehensive epistemological interpretation.With notions like"hardness","whiteness","stone","rationality","world","separation"and"hide"redefined,we compare them with the kernel ideas of Hume,Kant,and other epistemologists.Based on the comparison,we come to the conclusion that On the Hardness and Whiteness of a Stone represents Gongsun Long's epistemology,which is one of the important contributions made by Chinese philosophers to world's philosophy.
