Origin and Development of the"Sino-Tibetan Language Family"Hypothesis
The Sino-Tibetan language family"hypothesis has significantly promoted the comparative studies of the Sino-Tibetan languages since its official proposal in the late 19th century.By reviewing the theories and methods proposed at different stages of the hypothesis,this paper analyzes the main difficulties in the study of the"Sino-Tibetan language family",as well as the challenges and breakthroughs in the current study.It is found that the major difficulties for the Sino-Tibetan linguistics are the uncertainty of the phonological comparison,the cognate and the classification.It is noted that in addition to adhering to the traditional typology theory and the principle of comparative historical method,currently,scholars at home and abroad have also paid attention to the application of innovative methods such as anthropology,archaeology,and computer-aided genealogy chronology,which provide new ideas of multidisciplinary perspectives for the study of the"Sino-Tibetan language family".
