As the successor and leader of European phenomenology,Marion's "event" theory is the core theory of his phenomenology of givenness.Events spontaneously emerge, come suddenly, and last indefinitely in time. They are noncausal, nonobjectual and factual, and most typically show the basic mode of giving itself and showing itself of the phenomenon.By expounding the "event" theory,Marion breaks the conceptual shackles of the causal category imposed by the metaphysical subjects on the phenomenon, reveals the saturating and excessive event characteristics of the phenomenon's self-giving,dethrones the traditional metaphysical Cartesian thinking subject's control authority, and restores the original self of the phenomenon.
