How to Face Others——On Buddhism in Chinese History by Arthur F.Wright
The American sinologist Arthur Wright's book of Buddhism in Chinese History considers the historical process of Indian Buddhism entering China from a perspective of others. In this process, the author adopts a historical mode and views Chinese culture as a consecutive entirety. From his eyes,we can understand the pros and cons of sinicization of Buddhism. The latter can help us clarify the generation mechanism and local manifestation of this composite cultural system. If we've missed the deep participation, composition and shaping of Buddhism, that the comprehensiveness of Chinese culture and civilization is impossible. How to treat Buddhism as heterogeneous other poses a serious challenge to our existing foundation and stance in methodology, which forces us to re-examine the relationship between ourselves and the others.
