Hu Shi in Xu Fuguan's Eyes:A Hidden and Undeveloped Dispute over the"Paradigm"of Chinese Philosophical Research
As a representative of modem Neo-Confucianism,Xu Fuguan's own academic ideas and opinions are often presented in his comment on Hu Shi.Behind this,it is the controversy of the two generations over the"paradigm"of Chinese philosophy research,which is easily ignored by scholars.Xu Fuguan,as a historian with a unique Confucian position,on the one hand questioned Hu Shi's"scientific method"which inherited from Qianjia textual research,and gave a set of operable methods of ideological history that combined textual research and interpretation,and outlined the central structure of thinkers;On the other hand,he made a careful reflection on Hu Shi's"scientific attitude"in judging the tradition with the Western modern enlightenment concepts,and tried to explore the unique value system of Chinese culture from the Chinese standard.Xu Fuguan's inspection of Hu Shi's"scientific attitude"and"scientific method"provides a reference for today's Chinese philosophy research.
