Abstract
During early English capitalist era,the value of metallic coins and commodities fluctuated between their intrinsic and extrinsic value, but took a gradual shift to extrinsic value along with the development of market economy. In Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida,Helen and Cressida are like commodified precious metallic coins, and the debate about their value echoes monetary value debate in early modern England, swinging between their intrinsic value and the subjective value judgment by the Trojans and Greeks, and displaying a market value shift based on scarcity or relations between supply and demand. However, the Trojans disregard the intrinsic value of human beings or human labor and always insist on relying on market logic to make inter-personal value judgments. The exaggeration of Helen's value plunges the two states into an exhausting war and severely threat-ens state security and the health of body politic, reflecting an anxiety on market value in the age of Shakespeare.
