The Impact of Preschool Care Approaches on Cognitive and Non-cognitive Abilities of Urban Family Children
Against the backdrop of declining birth rates in China, understanding the relationship between childcare practices and the enhancement of population quality is crucial. This study utilizes CFPS data spanning from 2010 to 2020 and employs instrumental variable methods to empirically analyze the impact of preschool care approaches on cognitive and non-cognitive abilities of school-aged children in urban areas. The findings indi-cate that concerning cognitive abilities, intergenerational care during preschool years hampers the development of children's literacy and numeracy skills, while preschool social care significantly enhances numerical cogni-tive abilities.Examining non-cognitive abilities through the lens of the Big Five personality traits,it was ob-served that intergenerational care during preschool years has a significant negative impact on non-cognitive a-bilitics,particularly openness, while preschool social care effectively promotes the development of children's extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability traits, albeit negatively affecting conscientiousness and openness traits.Heterogeneity analysis underscores that the influence of childcare practices on children's cogni-tive and non-cognitive abilities is more pronounced among girls, mothers with higher levels of education, and non-only-child families.Based on these findings,to foster the accumulation of early human capital in chil-dren,it is recommended that governments enhance supportive policies for family care, expedite the establish-ment of a robust childcare service system, and comprehensively elevate the quality of social care services.
