Effects of different bagging time on the appearance and quality of melon fruit
Using melon 18X-9 and W4-3 as test materials, the effects of two bagging time,10 days and 20 days after pollination,on the basic traits, texture characteristics, and nutritional quality of melon fruit were studied to preliminarily screen the appropriate bagging time for melon and clarify the effects of bagging on the appearance and internal quality of melon fruit. The results showed that bagging treatment had no significant effect on the fruit shape index of the two melon materials. The flesh thickness, soluble solids content, and single fruit weight of 18X-9 bagged 10 days after pollination were higher than those of control, while the flesh thickness, soluble solids content, and single fruit weight of 18X-9 bagged 20 days after pollination were significantly lower than those of control. The flesh thickness and soluble solids content of W4-3 bagged 10 days after pollination were significantly higher than those of the other two treatments. The flesh thickness and soluble solids content of W4-3 bagged 20 days after pollination were slightly higher than those of the control, except for single fruit weight.Bagging could significantly reduce the flesh hardness of melon, but had a relatively small impact on the skin hardness; The brittleness of the fruit significantly increased, and bagging 10 days after pollination had a better effect. The quality index of 18X-9 bagged 10 days after pollination were significantly improved, with sucrose content and flavonoids content increasing the most significantly;18X-9 bagged 20 days after pollination showed higher quality index than the control except for fructose content and total phenols content. The fruit quality of the two bagging treatments of W4-3 was better than that of control, and bagging 10 days after pollination significantly improved the fruit quality of W4-3 melon compared to bagging 20 days after pollination. It could be seen that bagging treatment had a better promoting effect on the quality of W4-3 than 18X-9,and bagging 10 days after pollination had a better effect.
