A comprehensive questionnaire was created delve into the morphological features,growth habits,and functional properties of Salvia plants.This survey was administered both online and offline,yielding valuable insights into the potential of the Salvia market in China,as well as consumers'perceptions and preferences for these plants.With a total of 2 328 valid responses,the questionnaires displayed remarkable consistency across both formats.Notably,the survey revealed a significant imbalance in gender participation,with females accounting for 73.1%of the respondents,compared to 26.9%males.Furthermore,the majority of respondents(62.7%)fell within the 29-45 age range.Encouragingly,70.6%of consumers expressed a keen interest in purchasing Salvia plants,primarily for household use,suggesting promising consumption prospects for these plants in China's floral market.Consumers tend to favor Salvia plants with ornamental qualities such as a long blooming season and abundant flowers,as well as those with moderate plant heights ranging from 30 to 100 cm.Perennial herbs and plants suitable for pot cultivation also garnered strong preferences.In terms of color preferences,blue and purple flowers stood out,while multicolor,red,silver,and purple leaves also garnered significant attention.However,two key factors emerged as major concerns for consumers considering cultivating Salvia plants at home:the difficulty of maintenance and a lack of knowledge regarding cultivation methods.This study thus lays the groundwork for future cultivar development and the promotion of scientific cultivation practices for Salvia plants in China.
