The Prisoned Narrative Dynamics in a Text:Centered around Richardson's Theory and His Selected Essays
Narrative dynamics is one of the important topics in narrative studies.Focusing on Brian Richardson's Narrative Dynamics,Essays on Time,Plot,Closure, and Frames, the present paper mainly discusses two issues:(1)the viewpoint that the narrative dynamics, which is based on text only,i.e.is an internal movement in a text. The present author maintains that this viewpoint is biased and fails to systematically reveal the law of narrative;(2)in the meantime to review some related essays on narrative dynamics and expose their inadequateness, the present paper proposes to break the current pattern of formalist stud-ies represented by Richardson, and bring some other factors such as the author's creative inspiration, motives and the influences on the structuring text and reader's reading, observation, and perception that are related cognitive experience into the studies of narrative dynamics. In brief, narrative dynamics is not and internal and closed movement, but an interaction among the three sys-tems of author, text and reader.
