The popularization of Yan Zhenqing's(709-785)calligraphic style started in the Northern Song dynasty(960-1127)and greatly influenced the subsequent development of Chinese calligraphy.In the Yuan dynasty(1271-1368),owing to the great fame that it had gained during the Song Dynasty,the calligraphic style of Yan Zhenqing remained very current.This paper explores the reception of Yan Zhenqing's calligraphic style in the Yuan dynasty,from the perspective of appreciation and collecting activities.It surveys his calligraphic works through Wang Yun's(1227-1304)Catalog of Calligraphy and Painting,to ascertain what the attitude was to his style of calligraphy,as expressed by the official appreciation and collecting activities of the Yuan dynasty.Furthermore,by focusing on Yan Zhenqing's three calligraphic works,Liu Zhongshi Letter,Draft of the Elegy for the Nephew Jiming and Qimi Letter,and by analyzing gatherings of the literati in the Lower Yangtze,it also examines the dissemination of his calligraphy in popular contexts during the Yuan dynasty and the influence of popular collecting activities on its reception.
