The Chenzhou Western Jin Slips are handwritten specimens from the second half of the third century.In some,the standard script still retains evident brushwork traces of the clerical script,but the majority already tend towards the brushwork typical of the standard script.By focusing on the regular script of the Chenzhou Jin slips,the present paper analyses the legacy of the clerical script and the reasons for its emergence and,by including analysis of its mature brushwork,tries to explore questions regarding the transformation of the standard script and the self-consciousness of brushwork.
