A High-Ranking Official Family with Literary Talent in Succeeding Generations:The Inheritance and Development of the Calligraphy of the Lanling Xiao Clan in the Southern Dynasties
In the Southern Dynasties,the Lanling Xiao clan became the subject of an unparalleled legend for having risen from a poor family to an imperial clan in a short period of time.Calligraphy was one of the expressions of the culture of the gentry and there was an unprecedented flowering of this art in the Xiao clan between the Qi and Liang dynasties.Xiao Sihua was the first famous calligrapher of the Lanling Xiao clan and is mentioned in conjunction with Yang Xin,a famous calligrapher who lived between the Jin and Song dynasties.Xiao Sihua created favorable conditions for the development of the clan's calligraphy.After the founding of the Qi dynasty by Xiao Daocheng,the calligraphy tradition of the Lanling Xiao clan began its rise to prominence.Xiao Daocheng favored calligraphy with extraordinary bearing and authority and went on to influence his descendants.Xiao Ze(Emperor Wu of Qi),Xiao Ying(Prince of Linchuan),Xiao Ye(Prince of Wuling),Xiao Jian(Prince of Shixing),Xiao Jun(Prince of Hengyang)and Xiao Feng(Prince of Jiangxia)were all skilled at calligraphy,so that the calligraphy of the Lanling Xiao clan entered a period of full-scale development.The so-called"Xiao Branch of the Liang"changed the direction of the development of calligraphy in the Southern Dynasties.Xiao Yan,Emperor Wu of the Liang Dynasty,praised Zhong You and Wang Xizhi,while Xiao Tong,Xiao Gang,Xiao Yi and Xiao Lun modeled themselves on Zhong You and Wang Xizhi.The favor granted in the Song and Qi dynasties to Wang Xianzhi's calligraphy therefore came to an end.Since the period of the Xiao-Liang dynasties,Zhong Yao and Wang Xizhi have become the norms for Chinese calligraphy.Subsequent generations have taken them as models while striving to open up new vistas,creating a new era in the development of Chinese calligraphy.
