Zhongfeng Mingben's calligraphy is known as"the willow leaf style"柳葉體.Uta Lauer believes that this name comes from Liu Zhang's remark that Zhongfeng Mingben's calligraphy resembles willow leaves. Not only is the willow leaf style one of the eleven forms of the zhuan script, but its early appellation is actually"willow leaf zhuan script".This article focuses on Uta Lauer's point and further explores the fact that the willow leaf zhuan is not only an ancient Chinese calligraphic script, but also a method of brushwork.Zhongfeng Mingben's willow leaf-like semi-cursive script is full of Zen implications, and the characteristics of his brushwork are very distinctive;his writing, incorporating the style of the Zhang cursive script,is comparable to that of Yang Weizhen and is unique in the calligraphy of the Yuan Dynasty.
