Chen Yunzhang(1905-1955)and Lü Zhenbai(1907-1984)became close friends with Yi Da'an(1874-1941)when Yi was already 60 years old.They befriended him despite the difference in age because of their shared admiration for his knowledge.The social activities among the three involved poetic creation,painting,calligraphy and inscriptions on ancient bronzes and stone tablets,as well as sales of artworks.In addition to writing poetry,Chen Yunzhang and Lü Zhenbai also participated in the transcription,collation and publication of Yi Da'an's poetry.Yi Da'an created over 200 seals each for Chen Yunzhang and Lü Zhenbai,and even more calligraphic works and paintings.After the end of the War of Resistance against Japan,Yi Da'an faced economic difficulties.Chen Yunzhang and Lü Zhenbai acted as Yi Da'an's agents for the sale of his artworks,thus alleviating his living difficulties.After the death of Yi Da'an,Chen Yunzhang and Lü Zhenbai were also the main forces in arranging Yi Da'an's funeral.The interactions between the three reflect the conditions of survival and the helplessness of the Shanghai literati,who moved from prosperity and stability into collapse and chaos around the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan.
