Wei Heng's calligraphic style is described as"beautiful women adorned with flowers,trifling and laughing at the dressing table"in the Criticism of Ancient and Modern Calligraphers by Yuan Ang of the southern dynasty of Liang,and it was later associated with the quality of being"charming"(mei)in the Further Criticism of Calligraphers by Li Sizhen of the Tang.As time went on,many differences in the understanding of mei occurred,which led to a certain deviation in the understanding of Wei Heng's calligraphic style.Through analysis of the relevant literature and the contemporary context of Wei Heng,and by taking into account the relationship between the meaning of mei,Wei Heng's calligraphic style,his pursuit of"configuration"(shi)and"image"(xiang)and critical judgments by later literati,this paper aims to investigate and assess Wei Heng's calligraphy.
