Ruan Yuan's theory concerning the Northern and Southern schools of calligraphy exhibits shortcomings in both content and argumentation. The contradictions arising from the intersection of regions, eras and schools make it inherently inconsistent. While there are numerous critics, many fail to address the core issues. They often overlook the objective differences in calligraphic style between the northern and southern regions, falling into the logical fallacy of rejecting their differences on the grounds of their similarities.Ruan Yuan's imposition of a unified calligraphic system frees the Northern and Southern schools of calligraphy from temporal constraints, thus leading to a confusion of the individual calligraphers'affiliations with the Northern or Southern schools and miring any critical discourse in subjectivity. In order to address these issues,it is essential to reaffirm the theory of the Northern and Southern schools of calligraphy as a debate on regional calligraphic styles,to elucidate the objective basis for the distinction between the Northern and Southern schools and then to place conditional limitations on Ruan Yuan's discourse on the North-South schools of calligraphy.
