The Houma covenant texts and the bamboo slips from the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng represent the scripts of the states of Jin and Chu during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, respectively. This article compares four aspects of the two scripts:structural simplification, decorative complexity, irregular construction and diverse aesthetic styles,in order to highlight the features of character structure particular to the Houma covenant texts.Three factors influence these similarities and differences:brushwork, regional environment and writing materials and scribes. These factors further support the formation of theories regarding the question of the mutual appreciation of contemporary creation in the zhuan script and the ancient script of Jin and Chu.
