Neighborhood Regeneration:Spatial Production and the Reshaping of Community——A Case Study of Elevator Installation in G Community in Shanghai
In a modern society with overlapping risks, the pattern of an emotionally connected and interest-in-clusive community is crucial for good governance in urban communities.Existing studies mainly explain the genera-tion of community in terms of structural, organizational and energetic dimensions, ignoring the important influence of spatial production on community generation. The article chooses the process of elevator installation, considered as the public space production in G Community in S City where features as old neighborhood as a case,to deeply de-scribe the specific process of spatial production and community generation, and explore the inner mechanisms be-tween these two factors. We operationalize spatial production and point out that the operational process of spatial production involves a triple production process of physical, social, and spiritual space.Among them, the produc-tion of physical space contributes to the generation of a community of interests through the mechanism of property rights association, the production of social space contributes to the generation of a community of governance through the mechanism of multiparty participation, and the production of spiritual space contributes to the genera-tion of a emotional community through the mechanism of identity cohesion. We propose an analytical framework for systematically analyzing how spatial production contributes to community generation, and further discuss the gov-ernance orientation of China's spatial production and its significance to the neighborhood regeneration.
